Spree is built on top of the popular Ruby on Rails framework using Engines. It also comes with a complete set of automated tests which reduces the chances of introducing regression bugs as the software evolves. Since Spree is open source and based on popular standards, you will not have trouble finding developers to customize and maintain your store.
Spree is under continuous development as we add new features to each stable release. We have received over 5,000 contributions from over 150 different contributors. It has also been translated into over 30 different languages. We maintain a high quality of code by having the Spree core team review each contribution before it is accepted.
Because the Spree source code is freely available, you have complete control over the appearance and functionality of your store. If Spree is missing a feature you would like in your application, there is a good chance you can find it by using one of several hundred available third party extensions. You can host your store either in the "cloud" or on a dedicated server of your choice. Software upgrades can be installed when you need them and since you manage your own data there is no vendor lock in.
The Spree software is 100% free to use for both personal and commercial use. The same awesome software used by enterprise clients is also available to small and medium sized businesses free of charge. There is no “enterprise” edition of Spree - its all the same software!
