Frequently Asked Questions

Is this all I need to accept payments?

Yes. Both the U.S. and international options include everything you need to process payments. They serve as both your gateway and merchant account so no additional services are required.

How do my customers pay?

Your customers can pay by credit card like they would on any standard website. In the case of international stores you can also accept Moneybookers Digital Wallet payments plus any local payment options available for your country.

How long does it take to get approved?

Once you have completed the simple online application process you will be contacted by our partners if they need additional information. Customers that provide this information in a timely fashion are typically approved within 24-48 hours.

Do people enter their credit card information on my site?

In the case of U.S. stores your customers will enter their credit card details using a secure form that is hosted within your website. This information is then encrypted and relayed to the payment processor where it is either approved or denied. At no point are sensitive credit card details ever stored in the Spree store.

In the case of international stores the information is submitted via a secure form directly to Skrill. It completely bypasses your Spree server. The Skrill form itself is displayed within an invisible iframe on your site so your customers will appear to remain on your site throughout the checkout.

What is a merchant account?

A merchant account is a bank account that is used by a merchant specifically for the purpose of collecting proceeds from consumer bank accounts or credit card payment transactions. A Card Not Present (CNP) merchant account is used by merchants that receive payments electronically or in situations where payment is not physically presented to the merchant by the consumer at the time of the transaction.

Gateway vs. Merchant Account (What's the difference?)

The objective of any online transaction is to move money from the customer's bank account into your bank account. Unless you are accepting payments through a third party such as PayPal, you will always need a gateway to process credit card transactions. The following is a simplified description of how your gateway and merchant account communicate in order for you to receive a payment:

Authorization

A request for authorization is processed by the Gateway and is then retransmitted to the issuing bank (ie. the bank sponsoring the customer's credit card.)

Response

The issuing bank approves or declines the request and relays this information back to the gateway.

Batch

The gateway sends out a nightly "batch" request to the issuing bank requesting payment for all approved transactions.

Settlement

The issuing bank transfers funds into your merchant account. This is commonly referred to as a "settlement."

Will it work in my country?

Most likely. Our international solution is available in over 200 countries worldwide. Please see the Skrill website for a complete list of countries.

Does Spree work with other payment solutions?

Of course. We offer two officially supported options but Spree works with a variety of payment gateways and third party billing integrations.
