Is this all I need to accept payments?
Yes. Both the U.S. and international options include everything you need to process payments. They serve as both your gateway and merchant account so no additional services are required.
Can I use another payment processor?
Yes. These are just two common payment processors that are officially supported and known to work well with Spree. You can configure Spree to work with dozens of different payment providers (see the active_merchant library for a complete list.)
How do my customers pay?
Your customers can pay by credit card like they would on any standard website. In the case of international stores you can also accept Moneybookers Digital Wallet payments plus any local payment options available for your country.
How long does it take to get approved?
Once you have completed the simple online application process you will be contacted by our partners if they need additional information. Customers that provide this information in a timely fashion are typically approved within 24-48 hours.
What are the costs for international customers?
Our preferred international payment provider is Braintree. Braintree works with multiple banks in markets around the world. Each banking partner has different pricing structures and acceptance requirements. The exact rate for your country may differ. A payment specialist from Braintree will contact you to provide an exact quote
What is a merchant account?
A merchant account is a bank account that is used by a merchant specifically for the purpose of collecting proceeds from consumer bank accounts or credit card payment transactions. A Card Not Present (CNP) merchant account is used by merchants that receive payments electronically or in situations where payment is not physically presented to the merchant by the consumer at the time of the transaction.
Will it work in my country?
Braintree works in the U.S., Canada, the European Union and several other countries. More countries are being added all the time. Please see the Braintree website for a complete list of countries.
Gateway vs. Merchant Account (What's the difference?)
The objective of any online transaction is to move money from the customer's bank account into your bank account. Unless you are accepting payments through a third party such as PayPal, you will always need a gateway to process credit card transactions. The following is a simplified description of how your gateway and merchant account communicate in order for you to receive a payment:
A request for authorization is processed by the Gateway and is then retransmitted to the issuing bank (ie. the bank sponsoring the customer's credit card.)
The issuing bank approves or declines the request and relays this information back to the gateway.
The gateway sends out a nightly "batch" request to the issuing bank requesting payment for all approved transactions.
The issuing bank transfers funds into your merchant account. This is commonly referred to as a "settlement."
